The Metropolitan railway was the first ever underground railway, opened in 1863 in London, England. Since it was a steam engine, exhaust from the trains would cause discomfort for passengers and therefore deter people from taking it. However, in 1890 this was solved by having the first electrified subway system called the London Underground. Since its opening, it has expanded to 11 lines with 272 stations. It is also used by around 2 million people every day. At its deepest point, it is around 190 feet or 58 meters deep. That is deeper than the length of an Olympic size swimming pool which are massive. What do you think is the oldest subway system in the world? Post your answers in the comments.
